Hello, Kindergarten Griffins!
I hope you all enjoyed your fall break! It was good seeing you all for parent teacher conferences.
Spalding- The students are moving into a new exciting phase of Spalding homework! Our scholars now know how to write all 26 phonograms that cover the letters a-z. We will now spend some time briefly discussing upper-case letters this week and then on learning multi-letter phonograms. Homework will now follow the Written Phonogram Review format that you have been practicing on Thursdays. As a reminder, the homework paper with the Great Hearts logo at the top is for you only. Your student will write on the blank, lined Spalding paper. You will state the phonogram sound(s), and then they will write it in his/her best handwriting once. This will help your student practice writing the phonograms as they hear it, rather than just see it. Directions are provided at the top of the homework sheet. At this point, you are now doing both oral phonograms practice each night (with the Spalding flashcards) and written phonogram practice each night. Both are equally important in the acquisition of the phonograms. Please help your student continue to work on handwriting as they write their phonograms each night.
Red Folders- Since we are no longer explicitly practicing handwriting, we are providing those resources in the red Take Home folders to help you guide your student. In the slip-sheet covers you will find handwriting resources that show proper letter formation as well as the scripts for writing each letter. Please take a look, as we added these resources in over the fall break!
Library- please make sure your child brings their book back every week, so they are able to check out a new book each week.
- KA and KB will go every Tuesday.
- KC and KD will go every Wednesday.
Literary Character Day costume proposal slips are due Wednesday, October 23rd. Please make sure to turn this in for approval if your scholar plans to dress up Friday, October 25th. Please check previous email guidelines, the K-6 Classics to Keep List, and extra proposal slips.
- Students who do not wish to wear a costume should come to school in his or her regular uniform.
- Students must fill out a "Costume Proposal Slip" and turn it into their teacher on or before Wednesday, October 23rd and must be approved by the teacher.
- No character masks or all-over face paint (freckles, mustaches, etc. are okay).
- Hats, gloves, ears, etc. are acceptable as long as they stay on and are not a distraction (teacher will ask student to keep in backpack for the remainder of the day if this happens).
- No props, such as weapons, baskets, wands, etc.
- Please keep in mind students will be going to recess in their costumes, so make it one that allows free movement is encouraged.

Homework Reminders
- Be sure to read daily for 20 minutes; 100 minutes this week. Reading Logs will be collected on next Monday. Please record on the Reading Log page. If you miss a night, please record 0 minutes and initial rather than leaving it blank.
- Spalding handwriting practice. Spalding homework will continue to be in the Written Phonogram Review format-please read the GH logo homework sheet for instructions. Monday-Wednesday scholars write the list once; on Thursday in preparation for our test the list is written twice.
- Memorize poem by Friday!
