Weekly Updates Q1W4 (September 2-5, 2025)

Hello, Kindergarten Griffins!

In Spalding, we will continue to introduce one phonogram each day and will have a review of previously learned phonograms on Thursday!  It is very important that you do not jump ahead and teach your child a phonogram at home before we teach that phonogram in class.  We strongly recommend that each student has a set of Spalding phonogram flash cards to review during homework time each day (this is the OPR homework).  These cards are available for purchase on the Spalding International website: Store – Spalding Education

In Math class, we will work on developing our Number Sense, with numbers 1-5.  Parents can help at home by having your scholar count objects aloud, making sure to count carefully, and that their finger touches the object as they say each number.  We are practicing writing the numbers in class this week, and this practice will continue on homework.  Students often miscount simply because their counting words don't match their finger as they follow along.  Work on saying the numbers accurately ("three" is tricky for some but keep trying!) and encourage practice at a good pace.  If the student is counting objects on paper, that can be crossed out, have them cross out the object as they say the number.  This is a technique we practice in class.

In Literature, we will read the story of Momotaro, the Peach Boy.  We find the Virtue of Courage in his story and think about ways we can show courage in our daily lives.  We also use this story to learn about the Literary Element of setting-when and where the story takes place. His story is from Japan!

In Science we will learn about good hygiene, good manners, germs, and proper handwashing.  On Friday we will be introducing our Five Senses Unit.

Important Weekly News:

  • Tuesday, September 2nd our school will be conducting hearing and vision screenings for all Kindergarten and first-grade scholars. These screenings are an important way to help identify any concerns that may affect your child's learning and development. Any significant findings will be sent home shortly afterward with a referral to a specialist. More information was sent by GHNO.
